Creating a retainer
Ask a client for money up front: start a retainer, choose its type and amounts, and send it.
Written By Timothy Murenzi
Overview
A retainer asks your client for money up front. Workroom numbers it for its project, like RET-SEA1-00001.
Watch it: the Finances lesson in Campus, step 4, “Invoice and get paid”, chapter 7, “Retainers” (starts at 2:36).
Steps
Go to Finances › Client billing › All documents. Click New, then Retainer.

Pick the Project and the client to bill.
In the Retainer section, choose the type: Retainer, Products, Services and activities, or Products and services. Enter each amount.
Check the Description. It starts with your studio’s default.
Set the Date and Due date.
Click Save, or Save and send to email it to your client.

What happens next
The retainer shows in All documents. Its Payment column reads Unpaid until money comes in.
Your client can pay it online, or you can record a payment they made another way.
Good to know
Once a retainer is created, its client can’t be changed.
